Brainerd Point Guard Kentrell Evans Ignites Panthers Offense
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Nobody fires up the offense for the Brainerd high school basketball team like point guard Kentrell Evans. With his speed and slick moves, the junior stand-out maneuvers around the big boys to get the Panthers rolling.
Kentrell Evans is listed at 5’10, but he attacks the basket like he’s a seven-footer.
Said head coach Levar Brown: “He is Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, like he’s that guy. He’s Shaquille O’Neal. He’s just very quiet, very humble, but on the court he’s a monster. He plays angry and I like it.”
Evans endures monster workouts to enhance his ball skills.
Brown: “I’ve seen him dribble three basketballs at one time, and he had to split two garbage cans and jump over some cones to make the lay up, and catch a tennis ball once he’s finished the lay up. It’s ridiculous.”
No wonder some of Evans moves on the court are ridiculous.
Said Evans: “With my dribble penetration sometimes things happen just out of reaction. After the game, watching it on film, I’ll be like ‘Man, how did I do that?'”
Said guard Melvin Vista: “In Memphis, he started going off. He started having one of those games. After the game, we were staying in the same hotel as the team we just played. They beat us, but after the game, they were like, ‘Man, can we get your autograph?”’
It’s much easier to get Evans autograph than it is to guard him on the floor.
Said Brown: “A lot of times, I have to put one of my assistant coaches on him to guard him during practice. It’s just very tough to stay in front of that kid.”
Evans is averaging 14 points and over seven assists a game.
Said Evans: “I look at assists as a point. I always like my teammates to look good so it’s a lot of fun. I always let my teammates know before the game it’s all about having fun and making memories.”
Added Brown: “He’s our leader. He’s our leader. We go as he goes.”
