The committee vote came despite concerns raised by Republican Gov. Bill Haslam that Tennessee could lose federal education funding if the bill becomes law.
In several states, major businesses and sports organizations – including Coca-Cola, Disney and the NFL – have joined LGBT activists in raising concerns that similar measures could legalize discrimination.
On Wednesday, House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick passed legislation to serve families of fallen soldiers.
House Bill 1407 provides the opportunity for children of military parents, who die as a result of a targeted attack on Tennessee soil, to receive in-state tuition.
This legislation is in direct response to last summer’s tragic attacks in Chattanooga, but also insures that Tennessee serves any future victims and their families.
