New Security Improvements For 2017 Riverbend Festival
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The biggest event of summer in Chattanooga starts tomorrow.
Riverbend 2017 is expected to draw big crowds throughout the day.
Which brings up a few questions–like security and any new rules.
Few cities have an event that draws thousands of people downtown for 9 days in a row.
That translates into a lot of music and entertainment—and a challenge for law enforcement who are charged with security.
One thing different this year is camera surveillance.
“Prior to the festival we got those cameras up and running. We have the ability to search crowds with them, uh, those are streamed in through the artic center at the police department and at our command center where we’ve got real time and uh, viewing capabilities,” said Lt. Austin Garrett of the Chattanooga Police Department.
Everything is recorded also. If you decide to be a troublemaker..they’ll have your picture.
This emphasis on personal safety comes after years of experience with this festival, but what about firearms… even people with permits to carry?
“Needing a firearm inside.there’s not a need for one. Uh, but if someone chooses to carry one, they have that lawful right to do so. But they’ll be checked ..If they see they have a weapon they’ll be checked throughout the festival,” said Lt. Garrett.
And…how about the use of drones?
“This year, at this event, drones are off limit at Riverbend. Uh, we discussed it with local law enforcement, both the sheriff’s office and Chattanooga Police Department, we’re urging people please pass this on. We know drones are fun and we get some great footage video from the air..but the problem is they are unsafe when you have 60-to a hundred thousand people under you,” said Det. Marty Dunn of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
If you show up with one, you’ll get a warning. The second time you’ll be cited and may lose your drone.
drone crash last here last year.
“I can assure people coming to Riverbend festival you’re as safe here as you are at home,” said Lt. Garrett.
