Lookouts Start Second Half of the Season as Division Champs

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The Lookouts were supposed to start the second half of their regular season Thursday night, until Tropical Storm Cindy blew in with the rain. Chattanooga and Pensacola will now play a double-header on Sunday starting at 4:15.
The Lookouts have already clinched a playoff spot after winning their division in the first half of the regular season.
To close out the first half of the regular season, the Lookouts won 9 of 10 road games to clinch the division title.
Said manager Jake Mauer:”Going on a ten day road trip when you’re looking at it. Kind of well, we’ll see kind of how it goes. To come out of it the way we did and not only to clinch, but to also finish with a pretty good record there was pretty impressive.”
The Lookouts posted the best record in the Southern League, despite being tied for last in the league in homeruns with 31.
Said pitcher Ryan Eades:”I mean a lot of timely hits. We get runners on base and get them in somehow.”
Said Mauer:”We’re kind of one of those teams that won’t score one run every couple of innings. We usually score four or five in an inning, and we kind of wait for that to happen.
Infielder Nick Gordon is considered the Twins top prospect, and he has played the part in Chattanooga. He’s batting over .300, and he leads the team with 43 RBI’s, even though he’s the lead-off hitter.
Said Eades:”He’s a lot more mature for his age. The way he handles the bat. He just gets it done.”
Said Mauer:”He has driven the ball a little more than people anticipated, which is good. I know he’s right up there with doubles among the league leaders.”
Gordon has been great, but the Lookouts bullpen has been even better.
Said Mauer:”They really carried us through April. Our starters had a tough time in April. Yeah we turn it over. We’ve got a couple of guys on the back-end that are pretty good. Having great years.”
Looks like Chattanooga will start the second half with a few double-headers thanks to the rain.
Said Eades:”With the All-Star break we just had, we are all well-rested. We’re ready to go. Just kind of deal with whatever mother nature hands us.”
