Alabama Governor Wants Public Vote on State Lottery
Montgomery, AL (WDEF) Alabama Governor Robert Bentley calls for a special legislative session to create a state lottery.
Bentley calls on lawmakers to approve legislation letting voters decide whether to approve a constitutional amendment to allow a lottery. The Governor says the state has to find a solution to a funding crisis.
He says lottery proceeds would go to “essential state services” that aid children, the elderly, the mentally ill and law enforcement. “An Alabama lottery would generate $225 million annually and my plan will dedicate the new revenue to the basic services our state must provide.”
The announcement does not include a date for the special session.
