Vols Expect Tough ‘Rivalry’ Game With South Carolina
Tennessee’s last two games were against top ten teams.
Their final five games will be against unranked teams starting Saturday with South Carolina.
But the Vols expect the Gamecocks to battle them as hard as any of the big names on their schedule.
While a 5-2 record is disappointing for Tennessee, Coach Jones says it’s terrible, given who Tennessee played.
Said head coach Butch Jones:”The first seven games stretch, I’m really proud of our football team. There has been a lot of individuals who have set that it’s the most challenging. It’s the toughest schedule of first seven games in the country.”
Said South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp:”The last four games for them has probably been as tough a run that I’ve seen in a long time in this league of who they have played and where they played them.”
For the Vols, beating South Carolina has become a grind.
Said defensive lineman Kendal Vickers:”We look at this kind of like a rivalry game. Rivalry games are supposed to be close.”
Said defensive back Todd Kelly Jr:”The margin of victory is probably going to be small. It’s out their stadium. Night game. Sold-out. They’re trying to get bowl eligible.”
Added Muschamp:”Bottom line is Tennessee has won the last three years, so we’ve got to do something to change it.”
Bottom line for Tennessee, they need to run the table to stay in the race for the SEC East division title.
Said quarterback Josh Dobbs:”The stakes are obviously higher. We understand that. Our goal is just to focus in on each week. Each week is a one game season.”
For the second straight game, the Vols will face a true freshman at quarterback in Jake Bentley.
Jones:”He’s animated. He has great intensity. He can throw the football. I thought he managed the offense very well.”
Bentley has already shown his O-linemen who’s boss when it comes to Madden NFL football.
Said South Carolina offensive lineman Cory Helms:”Uh. Don’t ever play a quarterback in Madden. They start reading coverages. I’ll never do it again.”
