Vols Still in SEC East Race Despite Mounting Injuries
If the Vols football team were a Sprint Cup car, it would have plenty of damage and a lot of duct tape.
But it would still be in the race.
Even though injuries continue to mount for Tennessee, they’re still in the race for their division title.
Another week, another big time injury on Rocky Top. Kick returner and defensive back Evan Berry is done for the year after hurting his knee against Tennessee Tech.
Said head coach Butch Jones:”He’s going to be missed not only from a return aspect of things, but also we thought he was playing very, very well for us on the back-end of our defense.”
Berry was the fifth defensive player lost for the year due to injury.
But there’s a chance the Vols will get two players back from injury on Saturday.
Said Jones:”In terms of Cam Sutton, he will practice today. I don’t know if he’ll be game ready yet. I will know a little bit more when we meet again on Wednesday. Also Alvin Kamara will practice today as well. I’ll know a little bit more where he’s at on Wednesday as well, but I would say right now, Alvin is probably a little bit ahead of Cam.”
Life is never easy for a beat up team in the SEC as UT faces a physical Kentucky team this weekend.”
Said defensive line coach Steve Stripling:”It’s going to be a manly game. They’re very feisty. They get after you. Obviously our two schools are old rivals, so it will be a man-up game.”
And the Cats are pretty manly when they go with their wildcat formation.
Said defensive coordinator Bob Shoop:”The Wildcat to me, we’ve used it at different places I’ve been, it’s an opportunity to neutralize you as a defense, so you can’t get an extra player in the box.”
If Tennessee beats the Cats, and Florida loses to South Carolina, then the Vols control their own destiny for the SEC East title.
Said Jones:”Shoot this is exciting. This is an exciting week. We talk about playing meaningful games in November, and we’re playing three very, very meaningful games, and it starts Saturday at noon.”
