AAA: headlights aren’t getting brighter, just our perception of them

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – You may think that headlights are becoming brighter… but AAA says that is not totally true.

They tell us that there are a lot of different factors when it comes to headlights that impact your commute.

One being that more new cars hit the road, with brand new headlights.

Those driving along side headlights that are more than 3 years old, making it appear that some lights are brighter than others.

Stephanie Milani, AAA Public Affairs Director, says, “the new LED lights show up as blue lights so it’s kind of jarring to our brains and we think that they could be brighter. Now that’s not to say there aren’t situations where there is misalignment of the headlights and they’re shining up into your eyes because that can happen.”

AAA is also urging driver with older lights to get a D-I-Y restoration kit to clean their lights.

They also say all drivers need to check the alignment of their headlights, by shining them against a wall to make sure that they are illuminating the road and not shining up.
