Children’s Services closer to end of federal court oversight

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – After 15 years, the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services is nearing the end of federal oversight following a 2001 settlement over its treatment of foster care children.

The Tennessean reports that November court filings show the agency has maintained compliance with all the goals set out after the settlement and now maintains a level of performance “that is consistent with a reasonably well-performing child welfare system.”

Records also show DCS has taken steps to create an “external accountability center” that will take over the court’s job of monitoring the department for another 18 months and providing public updates on its operations.

The nonprofit Children’s Rights sued the department in 2000. DCS Commissioner Bonnie Hommrich said she was “very pleased” with the status of the lawsuit.
