UTC Women Ready to Begin Quest For 5th Straight SoCon Tournament Title

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The UTC women earned the top seed for the Southern Conference tournament this week in Asheville.
Even though Chattanooga has enjoyed a lot of success in the league tournament, they know it’s never easy earning the conference championship.
The SoCon tournament starts March Madness, but it feels more like March Magic in Asheville.
Said guard Chelsey Shumpert:”You feel it just when you walk in the arena in warm-ups and everything. Especially when you start playing, people are hitting shots they don’t normally hit.”
Said senior center Jasmine Joyner:”Each time we go to the SoCon tournament, each team comes out different. Their players transform or something.”
UTC transforms into winners.
They’ve won the tournament title four years in-a-row.
Said Joyner:”Ever since I’ve been here, I’ve won a ring. I got a ring with these ladies and kind of don’t want to mess up the tradition going on here.”
The Mocs have to win three games in three days to claim another ring.
But sometimes it’s hard to maintain your offensive consistency that many
games in-a-row.
Said head coach Jim Foster:”Defense is always the answer. Defense can generate offense. Defense can and always will be there if you want it to be. Defense is an attitude.”
Even though it’s tournament time, look for Coach Foster to bring his same sweater game.
Reporter:Does he wear the same sweater to every game?”
Said Joyner:”Well he had a blue one for the seniors actually, so we should feel special. But normally yes. I don’t know why, but yes.”
Said Foster:”My team is a lot more concerned with what I wear than I am, so let’s just leave it at that.”
Chattanooga will open against Western Carolina on Thursday at 11:30am.
