Heritage Hard Throwing Pitcher Cole Wilcox Attracts Plenty of Attention
Ringgold, GA-(WDEF-TV) At a recent high school baseball game at Heritage, the general manager for the San Diego Padres showed up. He was there to check out Generals senior pitcher Cole Wilcox. He’s one of the hardest throwing high school pitchers in America. Wilcox has already signed with Georgia. And this summer, he should be a first round pick in the major league draft.
Heritage coach Eric Beagles says when you look at the 6’5, 225-pound Wilcox, you would assume he can throw gas.
Said Beagles:”The leverage he creates for his size. His overall body-type is the first clue that you get.”
Reporter:”What is the highest you’ve hit on a radar gun?”
Said Wilcox:”I hit 97 at Wrigley.”
That’s right. Wilcox pitched at Wrigley Field this past summer at the Under Armour All-American game.
Said Wilcox:”Just being on that mound was real surreal knowing who all has stepped on there before. Being able to pitch in a situation like that was really awesome.”
Imagine what high school batters must think, facing an All-American who throws in the mid-90’s.
Said Heritage catcher Alex Coulter:”I get a lot of reactions. Guys turn around and are like, was that a fastball? I’m like that was just a slider, but it’s always fun to here some reactions.”
Beagles says 20 to 30 scouts show up when Wilcox pitches.
Said Coulter:”I always hear mumbling behind me whether it’s how hard he is throwing or if they like a pitch he threw or whatever. It definitely changes the whole atmosphere of the game.”
Said Beagles:”The good thing about Cole is he has had a lot of exposure through USA Baseball on that 18-under Olympic team. Couple of All-American games. He has been in the arena where there has been an awful lot of attention not just on him, but on the other players he has played with.”
A pitcher with a great arm who doubles as a great teammate.
Said Beagles:”It’s just a joy to be around him. It’s a lot of fun. He has got a great sense of humor.”
Said Wilcox:”I’m usually the guy that usually plans the stuff out and gets somebody else to do it. (laughter) That’s what I do.”
