Madi Rogers Gets The Dog That Could Save Her Life
6 months ago, before the ALS Ice Bucket challenge went viral, Grundy County residents were jumping in ponds and raising money for this little girl, Madi Rogers.
Now after a grueling 17 hour trip to Texas her family now has a dog that could save their daughter’s life.
"Her sugar levels went from 300 to the 150 to 200 range, this dog alerts if it falls below 80 or above 180, when we check on the meter the dog is 20 minutes ahead of the meter"
A Facebook group with 8000 members across four continents raised more than 20,000 dollars in just a few weeks.
Abbey is just one of nine dogs that take care of patients exactly like Madi all across America she’s settling in very well here in Grundy County.
"Like taking care of another kid at first but its worth it in the long run because I know it’s going to take care of her, in July she went DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis, she stayed in the hospital for 4 days"
Her mother Courtney Rogers says Abbey has now alerted her to major drops in her daughter’s blood sugar levels 75 times in less than a week.
Juvenile diabetes affects a growing number of children across America and diabetes is now the 7th leading cause of death in the US.
But hopefully not for Madi.
Courtney says none of this would have been possible without the support of Grundy County along with a 10,000 dollar donation from a war widow who was honoring her fallen husband.
