Chattanooga will get beagles from record breaking animal rescue in Virginia
4,000 dogs seized from breeding facility
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Humane Educational Society in Chattanooga is going to help with a massive animal rescue in Virginia.
The USDA has seized 4,000 beagles kept in horrific conditions at Envigo breeding and testing facilities in Cumberland, Virginia.
USDA inspectors say the dogs were undernourished, wounded, sick and non-responsive.
They’re calling this one of the largest-scale animal rescues in U.S. history.
HES has committed to finding new homes for at least 15 of the beagles.
They are not sure when they will get the first ones here in Chattanooga just yet.
The dogs are being assessed in Virginia before they will be sent to other pickup locations across the country.
The process could take several weeks.
“We are devastated at the suffering these dogs have endured HES staff and volunteers are eager to help these dogs find loving homes, says Rebecca Bryan, HES Executive Director. We are ready to hop in the transport van whenever we receive the call. It may not come for a couple of weeks, but staff already have go-bags packed, just in case.
Summer is our busy season. We have faith in the community to come together and help us meet the needs of local animals and the beagles.”
