NEW YORK (AP) – Stocks fell and ended the first quarter with a decline of 20%, the market’s worst quarter since the dark days of the financial crisis. The loss for the S&P 500 in March alone was 12.5% as the surge of coronavirus cases sent investors fleeing from the market. Stocks did claw back some of those losses with a rally the past week. Massive aid for the economy and markets from the Federal Reserve and Capitol Hill have helped spur some buying, although the S&P 500 and the Dow fell more than 1.5% Tuesday. Up next for the market: Friday’s jobs report and company earnings period.

NEW YORK (AP) – The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus has climbed past 3,600, eclipsing China’s official count. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo reported Tuesday that deaths in New York state had risen more than 300 from the day before, reaching about 1,550, mostly in New York City. That puts the U.S. ahead of China’s official death toll of about 3,300. Cuomo’s brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, has disclosed that he has become infected with the virus.

UNDATED (AP) – A 13-year-old boy from south London with no apparent underlying health conditions has died after testing positive for the new coronavirus. He is believed to be the youngest person in the U.K. to have died after contracting the COVID-19 disease. Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab died early Monday. His family said he had tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, a day after he was admitted to King’s College Hospital with coronavirus-related symptoms.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – A federal appeals court is putting on hold a victory for Texas abortion providers who are trying to stop the state from shuttering clinics during the coronavirus pandemic. The order Tuesday by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reflects the court battles still ahead for abortion providers across the U.S. during the outbreak. Governors across the country have issued executive orders halting nonessential medical surgeries to free up hospitals, and Republicans have said abortions should be included under those mandates.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) – Calls are mounting for the federal government to close Grand Canyon National Park after a resident of the iconic park tested positive for the coronavirus and has been in isolation. Members of Congress and city, county and tribal officials have urged the Interior Department to approve a request from the park to close. The Park Service has been deciding whether to shut down individual sites on a park-by-park basis, in consultation with state and local health officials. Neither the Interior Department nor the Park Service immediately responded to requests Tuesday on the status of the Grand Canyon’s request.
