Accountant sentenced for stealing from Volunteer Energy Cooperative

DECATUR, Tennessee (WDEF) – A Athens man has been sentenced for stealing a lot of money from the Volunteer Energy Cooperative where he worked.

Prosecutors say Jason Kittle stole almost a million dollars from the company over a six year period.

They say he used his position in the accounting department to create a refund scheme where he would transfer money into his own checking account.

Then he would use the money to pay off credit card bills.

At a hearing, he told the judge that he always meant to pay back the money, but couldn’t figure out how to do it without tripping alarms that he took it in the first place.

Kittle was sentenced to 17 years in prison and ordered to pay the money back.
