Alabama House votes to make fetal tissue sale a felony

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Alabama House has approved a bill that would make it a state felony to sell fetal tissue to researchers.

The House voted 76-24 for the bill Wednesday. The bill by Republican Rep. April Weaver would make it a felony to accept compensation or payment for fetal tissue for research purposes

Federal law already says abortion clinics cannot profit from donating tissue to researchers.

Weaver said the felony punishment would send a message that Alabama will not tolerate tissue sales.

The bill now moves to the Alabama Senate.
