Alabama lawmakers head toward lottery vote

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Alabama lawmakers are heading toward a vote on lottery legislation.

The Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee will vote on a lottery bill Tuesday. Senate President Pro Tempore Del Marsh says his goal is to get a bill before the full Senate on Thursday.

The committee is set to consider a bill by Republican Sen. Greg Albritton of Atmore that would limit a lottery to paper tickets. A rival bill to also allow electronic gambling terminals at state dog tracks is not on the agenda.

If the proposal is approved, the idea would go to a statewide vote.

Albritton says he’s optimistic about the bill’s chances, but cautions it is not a “slam dunk.”

Alabama is one of five states without a state lottery.
