Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. honors Dr. King through service

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated came together Monday with a mission rooted in unity, compassion, and giving back.

Members from the Pi Omega and Zeta Kappa chapters worked together to support the unhoused community by stuffing backpacks with essential items.

The backpacks included small blankets, hygiene products, and warm clothing to help individuals stay safe during colder weather.

In addition to assembling backpacks, sorority members also handed out hot lunches, continuing Dr. King’s legacy of service and care for others.

Jacqueline Brown, Vice President of Pi Omega Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, says service is at the heart of the organization’s mission.

“We know and we understand that people need these items, and we are here to serve with our hearts,” Brown said. “Serving all mankind is who we are. That is who we are, and we are here for the love of our community.”

The event was held in collaboration with Olivet Baptist Church, allowing both chapters to expand their outreach and strengthen their connection with the community they serve.

Sorority leaders say honoring Dr. King’s legacy means putting action behind words and showing up for those in need, a commitment they plan to continue well beyond the day of service.
