American Cruise Lines celebrate summer cruise in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- City officials gathered today to welcome passengers on the new American Cruise Lines, American Splendor Riverboat.

This was also a celebration of ACL’s first summer season of business in Chattanooga.

“This is important because this is the inaugural season on the Tennessee River for American cruise lines. Chattanooga is one of the great stops on that. It is one of our stops. We start a cruise here and go to Nashville. This is really wonderful. We started with seven cruises, and the response was so positive. We added seven more for this season,” said Frank Klipsch, Director of American Cruise Lines.

This summer, American Cruise Lines launched a brand new, Tennessee River, eight-day cruise.

“This becomes very popular because people hear about it amongst themselves. They meet other people. The idea is we are going to be looking at growing not only along the Tennessee River, but also other ports all over the United States,” said Klipsch. “People are very excited about coming to Chattanooga, and this entire itinerary from Chattanooga to Nashville. We are looking at growing more in the future.”

The cruises began in June and will operate through August aboard three of the company’s five Mississippi riverboats.

Chattanooga’s Mayor Tim Kelly says it is amazing to see American Cruise lines come to Chattanooga.

“I think we are talking about 14 cruises over the course of the cruising season. That is an impact of a million dollars a year to Chattanooga,” said Kelly. “People coming in and out of Chattanooga to get on board. It is a great impact and a great way to share the beauty of the Tennessee River gorge.”

The cruise will operate again in 2024, with 13 voyages cruising from May to early November.
