From The Archives: A Memorial Day story of a Chattanooga soldier and the Holocaust

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Jim Dorris, Jr. survived World War II.

But it would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Dorris was one of the U.S. soldiers who liberated the Dachau forced labor camp in Germany.

This week, his son, James Dorris III, came by the station asking us to dub a story about his father that aired on the CBS Evening News in 1995.

Back then, Jim returned to Germany for the 50th anniversary of the event.

And he’s proud to share with you this story about a Chattanooga soldier’s place in history.

(We realize this would make a better Veterans Day tribute, but we didn’t want to sit on the story for another six months. This was taped off our air, so it includes a Tornado Watch symbol from 1995)
