Are we finally rounding the corner on the pandemic?

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – With COVID cases, hospitalizations, and deaths all on the decline, could the Delta variant surge finally be coming to an end?

Dr. Jay Sizemore certainly thinks so.

“I think that’s in line with what we’ve seen in other areas of the country that were impacted by the Delta variant before we were.”

But does that mean that we’re finally rounding the curb on the pandemic?

Dr. Sizemore says it’s tough to say.

“Nobody can really explain why a lot of these waves have gone in these two month cycles.”

The Volunteer State still has a ways to go on vaccination rates.

Dr. Sizemore says that it remains to be seen if small children will be given the opportunity to get their shot.

“This Wednesday look for some information from the CDC with respect to Moderna and J&J boosters and then next Tuesday we will have the information with respect to children ages five to eleven.”

And with the recent passing of General Colin Powell, who was fully vaccinated, Sizemore is concerned that it might impact vaccination rates.

“His death is tragic but its not necessarily unexpected and we shouldn’t use that as a reason to not get vaccinated.”

The need for booster shots is also a hazy issue, but more information is coming sooner rather than later.

“Certainly it’ll be a question I think the ACIP will entertain as it discusses it’s final recommendation on boosters for those two companies this week.”
