Athens Celebrates Soap Box Derby Tradition

It’s a tradition unlike any other, as kids of all ages try to master the soap box.
"We wanted to do something for the young people that got you away from video games, got you learning a little physics, got you learning a little science," said Soap Box Derby Director Austin Fesmire.
And there is indeed a science to it….or a skill….or maybe just plain old luck, because no matter your age or gender no one seems to have an edge when the clip falls.
"They are all made the same, so that every young person has a chance. It’s one of the few sports where you can take a 7 or 8 year old and you can race a 17-18 year old and there’s no competitive advantage other than driving," added Fesmire.
But when two seven year-olds beat the competition 10 years their senior. There has to be a secret, right?
"Stay straight and get down low and just try your best," said Stock champion Ashleigh Turner.
"The secret for the last 77 years has been to stay low and drive straight, and that’s what you saw the champions do today," added Fesmire.
"I have a way of winning," explained Super Stock champion Hannah Evans.
"Coasting down the street, knowing the wind is blowing in your hair, and everything is good to go, and it’s just stress free and just having a good time, so we just like to bring back a lot of Americana when we do this," said Fesmire.
