Baylor Girls Make State Final Four With Nine Freshmen on the Roster

Chattanooga-(WDEF) Both the Baylor girls and boys basketball teams tip in the state Final Four on Friday in Nashville. Pretty cool accomplishment, especially for the girls, because nine of their 14 players are freshmen.

Given a roster full of freshmen, the expectations weren’t too high for Baylor.
Said senior guard JuToreyia Willis:”Last year at the end of the year everybody was like Baylor is not going to be too good next year, and at the beginning of this year, everybody was like Baylor is not going to be too good because we had so many freshmen.”
Reporter:”How was coach with so many freshmen on the team? Was he having to do a lot of coaching early on?”
Said freshman Raegyn Conley:”Yes. The first couple of weeks he had to do a lot of coaching. (chuckles)”
Said head coach John Gibson:”We had a couple of times early where the freshmen struggled to remember things, and the seniors wanted to move forward and go faster than we could go. So we to kind of taper that down a little bit. We had to teach at a different level.”
Yes the Red Raiders are young, and one point this year, they got even younger.
Said Gibson:”We had a huge week in the middle of the season where we had three people injured and three people sick. We had a couple of girls that had never even dressed on the varsity. They were on the JV freshmen, and I had to bring them up. We had to play them, and we still won some games.”
Senior JuToreyia Willis doesn’t worry about the age of most of her teammates.
Said Willis:”You have to remind them that you are not a freshman. You are a player. We’re all players. It doesn’t matter what grade you are in. You are out here on the court with us, and we just need you to do everything that you can do.”
And that’s what Baylor has done as they will play in the State Final Four Friday against Brentwood Academy.
Said Conley:”I think it’s really cool because a lot of people thought that we weren’t going to make it anywhere near here. So I think it’s really cool we made it here, especially with all the freshmen on the team.”

Baylor and Brentwood Academy are scheduled to tip around 2:15pm est at Lipscomb University in Nashville.
