Baylor Red Raiders Prepare to Host Ensworth in State Quarterfinals
Chattanooga-(WDEF) It has been a pretty good season for the Baylor basketball team so far.
They split their two meetings with Brentwood Academy, the three-time defending state champs, and they beat rival McCallie two out of three times.
Saurday night, the Red Raiders hope to punch their ticket to the state final four as they host Ensworth in the quarterfinals.
Baylor has what a lot of teams desire, good size and good guard play.
Said guard Tre Jackson:”We do have the length. We have the length for defense, which helps us a lot. I think defense has been the key this year for us mainly and the confidence that’s going on this year.”
Said head coach Austin Clark:”We have basketball players. We have some length, but they can play inside or out, and our length inside can play outside. So I’m really happy with them, and they share the ball so well.”
And Baylor is getting one of their top players back tomorrow night in Patrick Urey, who has been out about a month with an ankle injury.
Said Urey:”I can’t wait. The team has been doing a good job when I have been out, so I can’t wait to get back in and be with the guys, so it should be good.”
The Red Raiders are anxious to host Ensworth, a team they split with in the regular season.
Said forward Niko Simpkins:”Good team. They almost play in a reverse way of how we run our offense, so it’s going to be an interesting match-up to see how we do. They came for us the second time we played them, which was a note to us, and I think we will come out ready.”
Baylor has not been to the final four in six years, and they haven’t played for the state title since 2002.
Reporter:”Do you mention that kind of history at all to these guys saying hey, this could really be a special deal or just kind of leave that alone.”
Said Clark:”No. No. I mention it. I don’t dwell on it because I hope they know enough about Baylor School that they are aware of it.”
Said Jackson:”We are just amped. We are ready to get out there and play for our school. Try to bring a ring home.”
Said Clark:”We are on an edge right now. The kids are playing really well. Praticing hard. I hope we get what we deserve.”
