Beau Hossler Gets 8 Birdies to Grab Share of the Lead at Southern Am
OOLTEWAH, TN – Texas sophomore Beau Hossler carded eight birdies in a wild round Thursday to catch first-round leader Grayson Murray for a share of the lead at the midpoint of the 108th Southern Amateur. Hossler, an All-Big 12 selection from Mission Viejo, CA, suffered two bogeys and a double-bogey at the difficult Honors Course, but ran in birdies on two of his final three holes to match Murray’s 36-hole total of 6-under-par 138.
Hossler’s playing partner, Trevor Cone, an All-ACC selection for Virginia Tech, had taken the lead briefly at 7-under, but dropped three shots on his incoming nine to fall two strokes back after a disappointing even-par 72.
Georgia Tech senior Seth Reeves, from Suwanee, GA, shot 65 for the low round of the day and stands at even-par 144.
The field was cut to the low 66 players and ties for the final two rounds Friday and Saturday. The winner earns an invitation to compete in the PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational next spring in Orlando.
