Behind the Curtain: CFD Wildland Fire Team

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Summer is nearly here which means a high likelihood of wildfires due to drought conditions. But never fear, the Chattanooga Fire Department is geared up and ready for the dry season with their Wildland Fire Team.

News 12’s Amelia Greer got to visit the Chattanooga Fire Department to take a look behind the curtain on the supplies and techniques used to put out wildfires. For example, Senior Firefighter Jonathan Ivey explains how it is more effective to cut the fuel supply of a fire by creating a fuel break involving tree removal rather than using water.

Greer also got to learn about the stamina needed to be on the Wildland Fire team, as Captain David McBurnett show us all the medical equipment that is carried in a backpack that weighs 50lbs, sometimes more.
