Billy Hawk found guilty of murder 35 years later

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The jury finds Billy Hawk guilty of murdering Johnnie Mack Salyer in 1981.

He will serve life in prison.

Prosecutors said that Hawk killed Salyer, stuffed the body into a barrel and dumped it in the Tennessee River 35 years ago.

Investigators suspected Hawk back then, but couldn’t make the case.

The Cold Case unit finally broke the case last year.

This is their first murder conviction since the District Attorney General put them together.
