Carrie Underwood Wins Two CMT Music Awards, Kane Brown Co-Hosts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) — The fans have spoken.

We now know which country artists they’ve picked to take home a CMT Music Award.

The show aired on CBS Monday night for the first time.

News 12 was there in Nashville for all of the excitement.

Country music star Carrie Underwood will need an even bigger display case for all of her CMT trophies.

She won two more awards Monday night for the song “If I Didn’t Love You” with Jason Aldean.

Carrie’s already the most awarded artist in CMT Awards history with now 25 wins.

“To put it in perspective, I’ve won three of these in my career, and I won two tonight. So, I mean, it’s a total of five,” Aldean said. “I told Carrie we should’ve recorded a song together a long time ago, I may have a few more of these.”

Jason and Carrie both took home Video of the Year, and Collaborative Video of the Year.

Tennessee Valley native Kane Brown still got plenty of face time during the awards show, taking on last minute co-hosting duties with “Captain America” actor Anthony Mackie.

Kelsea Ballerini had to co-host from home after getting COVID-19.

Brown’s the only artist this year nominated for four awards, and made the top three finalists for Video of the Year.

He also did a killer performance of his song “One Mississippi.”

Parker McCollum says he was surprised to win Breakthrough Video of the Year, and didn’t know what to say.

“My mom’s here, my wife’s parents are here tonight, so it’s kind’ve cool that they got to see that,” McCollum said.

Parker also performed “To Be Loved By You,” which earned him that trophy.

News 12 caught up with Caitlyn Smith, who was also nominated for Breakthrough Video of the Year with Old Dominion.

She sang her new song, “High,” which just came out last week.

“This is my first nomination, and it is my first time performing on an awards show, so I’m feeling a little nervous, but really, really excited,” Smith said.

CBS Mornings Anchor Gayle King says she was excited to accept the invite to present at the CMT Music Awards this year.

She tells News 12 she was actually born in Chattanooga, and she’s listened to country music a long time.

“Country music is known for its storytelling, so is CBS, so to me it makes sense that it’s such a great partnership,” King said.

Another awards presenter and country artist, Dylan Scott, can’t argue with that.

“I’m just pumped up to be here,” Scott said. “Thanks to all the fans for letting us be here. This will be cool.”
