Central Purple Pounders Excited With Return to State Tournament

Chattanooga-(WDEF) Last week, the Central high school basketball team won four games in five days to clinch a spot in the state tournament.

And now the Purple Pounders are headed to Murfreesboro for only the second time since 1960.
For the last two years, Central head coach Rick Rogers has taken his team to Murfreesboro to watch the state tournament games.
With that seed planted, this year’s team was determined to play at MTSU.
Said forward Ryan Montgomery,"Our main goal was to go to state since the first practice."
Central’s dream seemed in jeopardy following an ugly loss to rival Brainerd in January.
Said Rogers,"They really put a thrashing on us at Brainerd and beat us by about 31 points. Since that day, we haven’t lost a game."
The Purple Pounders have won twelve straight, including two wins over Brainerd.
Said guard Tre Tiller,"We might not have a big team, but we’ve got heart. We all have a big heart."
Added Rogers,"The key to this team is like I told them in the locker room, there’s no one individual star. They feed off of each other.
Last week, Central beat Livingston Academy in overtime in the sub-state to punch their ticket to the state tournament for the first time since 1997.
Said Montgomery,"When we won the sub-state game, my phone just blew up. I woke up with like fifty text messages and a whole bunch of tweets congratulating us because we’ve only been twice. So it’s a big achievement for our school."
Said Rogers,"We had an e-mail today from a fellow who graduated in 1974 that was an all-district player. He wished us well and said take no prisoners, so that’s going to be our motto when we get to the state tournament."
Central hopes the dream continues with a state title.
Said Rogers,"They don’t want to go home. i just bought them new shoes last week, so they’re wanting to keep playing."
Central will open up the state quarterfinals against Ripley on Thursday at 5:30pm in Murfreesboro.
