CFC Coaches and Players Ready to Welcome Cosmos to Fort Finley For Title Game
Chattanooga-(WDEF) CFC coach Bill Elliott says the New York Cosmos is the biggest name in U.S. soccer.
And yet, the Cosmos agreed to send their B-team to Chattanooga for the NPSL national title game, even though New York had the right to host. Seems even the Cosmos are ready to jump on the CFC bandwagon that has energized the Scenic City.
Hearing that Chattanooga landed the NPSL national title game was literally a dream come true for the CFC’s Luke Winter.
"I actually woke up from a nap. My phone was just lit up. Went to sleep and woke up, and it was just crazy. Just jumped straight out of bed. Talked to my parents. It’s cool."
And basically, it’s the Chattahooligans and CFC crowd support that got the title game to Finley Stadium.
Said goalie Greg Hartley,"Why wouldn’t the NPSL want to come to Chattanooga and host a final with our fans? We have the best fans in the league. It’s perfect for the league and both teams to be able to play in front of a great crowd."
Said Elliott,"That was one of the reasons the Cosmos agreed to come here as I understand it. They felt like their young players, if they’re going to be professionals, needed to play in this kind of environment."
Maybe Chattanooga is becoming the soccer capital of the South. The U.S. Women’s exhibition game later this month at Fort Finley has already sold-out.
Said Elliott,"ESPN announcers were talking about Chattanooga being a soccer city today while Bayern Munich was playing. Landon Donovan sending out tweets about us. There’s a buzz around the soccer community all over the United States about Chattanooga. It’s incredibly exciting what’s going on."
With home field advantage on Saturday, the CFC are hoping that will help them claim their first ever national title.
Said Hartley,"We’ve been to what three finals out of the past four years. What has happened recently, I think it would be good for us to bring something back. A little bit of joy and happiness to the community by winning a national title."
Added Winter,"There’s no doubt about it that Saturday night is going to be a special day for the players, the club, and the city."
Game time Saturday night is set for 7:30.
