CHA Ballet throws a “Curveball” onto the UTC Fine Arts Center stage

CHA Ballet CEO and Artistic Director Brian McSween joins News 12’s Amelia Greer to talk about the newest, original ballet coming to Chattanooga called “Curveball.”

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Chattanooga ballerinas are twirling a home run with the premiere of an original ballet called Curveball which is inspired by a trailblazing female pitcher in the 30s.

Curveball follows the story of Chattanooga sports legend, Jackie Mitchell, who was the 17-year-old female pitcher that struck out Babe Ruth in 1931 while playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts. The play will feature dynamic storytelling of a love story with a baseball game at the end.

“Chattanooga is its own curveball. No on expected it to build an aquarium in a landlocked state. No one expected it to have high-speed internet into every home. So Chattanooga represents this curveball idea on something that’s unexpected and something that can surprise you. We wanted to exemplify that through the creation of the ballet,” CHA Ballet Artistic Director Brian McSween says on the inspiration for the play.

Performances will be held at the UTC Fine Art Center on April 11 – 13 and tickets are on sale. For alumni of the CHA Ballet, they will be celebrating the school’s 50th anniversary and their ticket will include a three course dinner, a history lesson on Jackie Mitchell and the Lookouts, a ride to the performance venue for alumni, and a post-performance talk about the production.
