Chattanooga City Councilman Chris Anderson releases statement about so-called Twitter war with Tea Party

Chattanooga, Tenn. (WDEF) – After hearing about the Orlando nightclub massacre, Chattanooga City Councilman Chris Anderson tweeted –quote– “Wondering what will win out today: Republican hatred for gays or Republican hatred for other religions.”

That tweet sparked a war of words with Chattanooga Tea Party leader Mark West, who called Anderson a liar who incites violence.

We reached out to Councilman Anderson for a statement.

He responded –quote– “Many in our government and political circles have used their positions to create a hostile environment for LGBT Americans through their harsh, hateful rhetoric. As a public official, I feel it is my duty to call them out and hold them accountable. If I don’t speak out, who will?”

Earlier in day West said, “We just had an Islamic extremists murder 50 people. They’re laying on the ground in a separate city, and he’s going to say the Chattanooga Tea Party, Mark West, or the governor had something to do with it. He blames us for it. The man is in my view completely political in his entire life or he’s perhaps not even fit to for the office that he’s holding, but I’ll leave that up to the voters to decide.”
