Chattanooga Fire Department encourages heater safety with cold season approaching

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Cold days are ahead and it’s important to keep your house warm, but also safe.

The Chattanooga Fire Department is urging residents to be safe while turning on heaters during the cold season.

They ask residents to be careful with open flame heaters, and especially with candles.

While turning on your heater, they say to make sure it’s at least three feet from combustible material.

“I know during the summer months we move furniture around and we may have covered up some of the space heaters,” said Chattanooga Fire Department Chief Phil Hyman. “Just be aware that they will kick on when the temperature drops, and this is a particularly dangerous time of the year in that transition.”

The Chattanooga Fire Department recommends says if you are having any issues to call your local professional heating service.
