Chattanooga Firefighter Injured at House Fire

Chattanooga, Tenn. (WDEF) – According to the Chattanooga Fire Department, one firefighter suffered non life-threatening injures after responding to a fire on Churchill Downs Circle.

The fire started after the homeowner said he was burning weeds around a backyard playground with a torch. The homeowner told firefighters that the rubber mulch beneath the playground caught fire; then the fire spread toward his house and began melting the siding.

Battalion Chief Rick Boatwright said that one firefighter was injured after climbing up into the attic to ensure the fire didn’t spread inside. When the firefighter came to climb down out of the attic, the attic ladder collapsed and the firefighter fell to the floor. The Battalion Chief said the firefighter was transported to Erlanger East with non life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental and the damage estimated at $5,000.
