Chattanooga Making Confederate Cemetery Changes
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — In light of the recent violent Charlottesville protests, Mayor Andy Berke is making some changes to the city’s involvement with Chattanooga’s Confederate Cemetery.
Mayor Berke announced on Friday that he’s asked the city attorney to file paperwork, to remove the city as a trustee of the cemetery on Third Street.
Berke says the city should invest in its future, not a discredited past.
He added that this move means Chattanooga will not condone any traces of racism that taints our past, and residents will come together, united.
The city was named a trustee of the Confederate Cemetery as far back as 1942.
A court will now be asked to determine the rightful owner of the cemetery.
