Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport plans to add more parking spaces
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport will soon have more parking spaces to accommodate an increasing amount of passengers.
On Tuesday afternoon at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, signs saying lots were full greeted travelers, like Daly Turnbull. She had to park in the long term overflow lot and then take the shuttle.
“I was shocked. I had no idea we had gotten that popular. Which I am happy for us, because if we are that popular, we have more travelers and that means better fares,” Turnbull said.
Terry Hart, President and CEO of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority, says more and more people have been coming to the airport.
“We have had rapid growth over the last few years on customers coming through the airport, which is great to see. The airlines like that, we like that. When the airlines see that they want to continue to grow. We want them to grow. We need to make sure that we have the infrastructure that is in place to accommodate that growth and as such parking is one of those things,” Hart said.
Hart says they received approval to start the design of another remote surface lot. He says that will allow them to begin the process of building a parking deck.
“That will produce a 1,300 space deck that will be adjacent to the terminal building and provide that covered up close parking to the terminal, which obviously we understand is most important to our customers,” Hart said.
When the project is all done there will be 650 to 700 additional spaces.
“Obviously, I ask that they bare with us a little bit as we go through these growing pains, but we are working feverishly to make things happen and to be able to accommodate everyone,” Hart said.
Travelers look forward to the new spaces.
“I think if they are adding new parking that would be great,” Turnbull said.
In the meantime she’ll take the shuttle.
Hart expects construction to start on the parking deck next summer.
