CPD arrests suspect in Oakland Ave shooting

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Jonathan Smith has been taken into custody today by the Chattanooga Police Department for a shooting that was reported last week near Oakland Avenue.

The 33-year-old has been charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.

Officers received a call about the shooting on August 16th around 5:10 PM.

Upon arrival, officers located the victim, later identified as 20-year-old Terry Thomas, who was suffering from a gunshot wound.

HCEMS responded and transported Thomas to a local hospital to be treated for his non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers then secured the scene and called for Violent Crime Bureau investigators. Investigators later learned that the shooting resulted from a disorder between the victim and suspect.

Police say Smith fled the area before police arrival.


Chattanooga Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call 423-698-2525.  The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when available.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Chattanooga Police Department is investigating a shooting near the intersection of Oakland Avenue and west 43rd street.

The shooting was reported on Ohls Avenue, but the police blocked off a section of Oakland Avenue as they investigated.

There is very limited information right now. Police say it appears the injuries are non-life threatening.

Police are gathering evidence speaking with witnesses and trying to gather more information about what happened.

When News 12 arrived on the scene, someone was being transported to the hospital by E-M-S. Witnesses tell News 12 that a man could be heard screaming from the back of the ambulance.
