Chattanooga Police: “Weekend shootings were gang related.”
The parking lot outside Bootsie’s nightclub, an area in the 600 block of Willow Street and the parking lot of Cromwell Hills apartments were all scenes of gun violence this past weekend.
When it was all said and done, four people suffered non-life threatening injuries.
According to investigators, the shootings were not only gang related but connected to each other. But that’s not all.
Prior to Saturday’s shootings, a memorial site in the 800 block of Willow Street for Frederick Clark was destroyed. Clark was killed in a gang related shooting back in August.
"There is a theory that the burning of the memorial might have been the catalyst to the shootings this weekend," said Chattanooga Police Lt. Glenn Scruggs.
A new memorial site has been set up 20 feet from the old one. But this time a police surveillance vehicle equipped with a video camera is in place to record everything that happens; a tactic fueled by a theory that would suggest more gang violence related to the recent shootings is looming.
"I don’t know if we heard the last of it. But we definitely built up our patrols in those areas. We’ve got more surveillance cars and patrol officers and more guys going door-to-door asking if anyone knows what’s going on," Scruggs said.
So far, police have no suspects in custody in connection to the weekend shootings.
