Chattanooga Zoo adding a Giant Anteater exhibit

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Chattanooga Zoo is getting a new animal.

They are creating a new outdoor habitat for a Giant Anteater.

The anteater is named Betsy and she comes from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

They hope to breed her with a male to help increase the population.

You will be able to see Betsy in the outdoor exhibit when the temperature gets above 45 degrees.

“Giant anteaters are insectivorous mammals. They can grow up to 7ft from the tip of their snout to the end of their tail and can weigh up to 140lbs. Because giant anteaters have poor eyesight and hearing, their noses are their most valuable tool. Their tubular snouts and two foot long tongues allow them to reach in tiny spaces where insects and ants may be hiding. The giant anteater is currently considered vulnerable with its population declining daily.”

Here is video of Betsy when she was a baby a couple of years ago in Chicago.

Now as an adult.
