Chemical Spill Closes the Hiwassee River

Charleston, TN (WDEF) – A leak at the Olin Chlor Alkali plant in Charleston early this morning shut down traffic on the Hiwassee River for a time.

But Bradley County EMA officials say residents were not in any danger.

Our media partners at the Cleveland Daily Banner report that it was reportedly chlorine that spilled around 5:30 AM.

Bradley EMA officials say the leak was found and contained this morning.

Crews did tell neighbors to stay inside their homes this morning and boat traffic was diverted from the scene.

The river has now reopened.
