Chimney fire damages a Signal Mountain family’s home before Thanksgiving

SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WDEF) – A Signal Mountain family did not celebrate Thanksgiving in their home this year due to a chimney fire.

On Wednesday night at 8:40 P.M., a homeowner called 911 and reported a heavy smell of smoke in the attic.

The Signal Mountain Fire Department responded to 8 Balfour Court and reported no visible smoke outside.

Upon further inspection, firefighters quickly discovered a fire in the attic.

The attic fire was extinguished quickly, but they found the fire moving down the walls to the home’s second floor.

They extinguished the wall fire and the chimney flue.

The homeowner reported that this was their first night using the chimney.

Signal Mountain Fire Chief, Larry Sloan, says the fire originally started in the chimney where the fire separated around the chimney pipes and traveled into the attic.

Significant water damage was made to the home due to fire extinguishment.

A mutual aid response was requested by Signal Mountain Fire Department for additional manpower and Walden’s Ridge Emergency Service and Chattanooga Fire Department responded.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
