Christian Hurd challenges Steve Tarvin for his seat in Georgia House District 2 race coming up in May

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. (WDEF) – The Georgia House District 2 race is coming up in May, with Marine Corps veteran Christian Hurd challenging longtime Northwest Georgia Representative Steve Tarvin for the seat.

News 12 spoke with both candidates about why they believe voters should choose them.

Incumbent Steve Tarvin spoke with News 12 by phone about the upcoming race and his years of service representing the district.

“Well, I mean, I have not been serving a very long time, but I have been serving 12 years. I guess you might consider that to be a long time,” Tarvin said.

With the election approaching, Tarvin said he believes he has remained committed to serving his constituents.

“I have never missed a committee meeting unless I was in another committee meeting. I will be one of the first one or two people in the House every morning and one of the last 10 to 20 to leave every afternoon. I sit in my seat, I vote, and I do what I think is best for the citizens of my district. So yes, I feel like I am doing a very adequate job,” Tarvin said.

Tarvin’s challenger, Christian Hurd, said he believes it is time for new leadership in District 2.

“I am ready to fight. I am ready to fight for our citizens and be that accessible link to state government that a lot of our voters are not getting right now,” Hurd said.

Hurd said he wants voters to know where he stands and said he is committed to being accessible to the community.

“I will tell you what I am doing every day. I am meeting voters where they are at, whether that is at their front doorstep, on the phone, at a workplace, or a business. I am going to them, not to tell them what I care about, but to hear what they care about,” Hurd said.

He then continued to give his phone number.

“My personal number is 706-483-2609.”

Tarvin defended his accessibility as well, pointing to his long-standing public phone number.

“You called this number, I guess you called my office number, didn’t you?” Tarvin asked. “And what did I do? I answered it. And it is a cell phone, and it has been listed for 12 years.”

Both candidates shared final thoughts as voters prepare to head to the polls.

“If people do not like what I have done in the past, they are not going to like what I do in the future. So, they have a clear-cut choice,” Tarvin said.

“I want everyone to know who I am and who I stand for. They are always going to have that link to me, so you can reach out to me and tell me what you think,” Hurd said.

Both men will face off in the Georgia House District 2 race in May.

News 12 will continue to follow the race and keep viewers informed.
