City Councilman Jeff Davis hosts meeting to discuss plans to revitalize Northgate Mall
HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF) – Plans to revitalize Northgate Mall were the focus of a town hall meeting held at the Hixson Community Center.
Chattanooga City Councilman Jeff Davis hosted the meeting to discuss upcoming improvements and gather feedback from residents about the future of the longtime Hixson landmark.
In March, the Chattanooga Industrial Development Board approved a tax increment financing agreement to help fund infrastructure upgrades at the property.
Davis explained that Northgate Mall has long served as Hixson’s commercial center, but like many enclosed malls across the country, it has struggled in recent years.
“Northgate for a long time has been the commercial hub of Hixson. Like a lot of enclosed malls, it’s fallen by the wayside over the years. CBL is very interested in revitalizing it, and obviously the community is as well.”
Residents attending the meeting were able to review conceptual renderings and provide input on potential features for the redevelopment project.
Davis said community feedback will play a major role in shaping the final plans.
“These are the folks who are going to be shopping there, spending their money there, and spending their time there. It’s very important to me and to CBL, the property owner and developer, to engage with the public throughout the process and build something that will be successful in the community.”
Potential plans discussed during the meeting included public green space, new retail opportunities, restaurants, and areas for entertainment and community gatherings.
Davis has also encouraged developers to preserve space for a future library branch, an outdoor entertainment venue, and a public park.
CBL representatives said their vision for the redevelopment centers on creating a community focused destination that reflects the values and priorities of Hixson residents while helping bring new life to Northgate Mall.
