Cleveland Police looking to hire new officers

CLEVELAND, Tennessee(WDEF) – The Cleveland Police Department hopes to hire new officers in the wake of scandals that have forced several officers to resign.

On September 22, anyone looking start a career in law enforcement or transfer from their current law enforcement department to a department in need of new officers are advised to attend the Cleveland Police Department job fair.

The event will run from 6:30 P.M. To 7:30 inside lobby of the Cleveland Police Service Center.

Anyone wishing to attend will have the opportunity to speak with members of the SWAT Team, canine division, honor guard, school resource officers and the bomb squad.

A variety of topics will be discussed including the application process, hiring timeline, qualifications and job duties.

"We’re looking for qualified applicants who are interested in serving this community; serving the community of Cleveland," said Cleveland Police Spokesperson Evie West.

The search for new officers comes in the wake of numerous scandals involving officers who have been forced to leave the department. The most recent scandal came just days ago when officer Edwin Millan was indicted for insurance fraud. This past Summer two officers were involved in a scandal that centered around extramarital affairs.

"We have had a few officers who have resigned so we will be filling those positions. We have officers right now in the middle where the internal investigation is complete but we still haven’t had a decision made on if they will be terminated or resign or stay here," West said.

Like any other law enforcement job, applicants will have to fill out an application and undergo an extensive background check. But the one thing hiring managers will be serious about is character, especially since recent department scandals have involved officers whose characters have been called in to question.
