Collegedale ranked as third safest city in Tennessee
COLLEGEDALE, Tenn. (WDEF) — The city of Collegedale is the third safest city in Tennessee, according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security.
This town of just about 12,000 people has put itself on the map as one of the safest communities in the entire state of Tennessee. And city officials credit a long-standing stable government for the city’s low crime rate.
So, what keeps Collegedale safe?
“Well, the men and women of the Collegedale Police Department come in and simply do their job everyday. They’re very excited to be here. We have a great work force and they come in and do an effective job,” Assistant Police Chief James Hardeman said.
In 2016, Collegedale has reported only eight violent crimes. Per capita crime rates rank exponentially lower than those for the state and the nation.
Mayor Katie Lamb says the low rates come from the high level of trust between citizens and police.
“They know the community, and they listen to the community. The community knows that if they call something in there’s going to be an officer there, as soon as they can,” Lamb said.
Even beyond the police department, Mayor Lamb credits city Manager Ted Rogers for keeping a stable government, filled with officials who have served the community for decades.
“That stability I think really the citizens migrate to. And they know that they will be listened to,” Lamb said.
Collegedale ranks just behind Brentwood and Spring Hill on the list.
“Being the third safest city in Tennessee means to the police department what it means to our community in that Collegedale is a great place to live, work and play,” Officer Hardeman added.
Officer Hardeman also said that the department is constantly working to stay up to date with the latest crime trends — all to keep this town among the safest in Tennessee.
