Commissioners fund programs to treat mental issues for jail inmates

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Hamilton County Commissioners on Wednesday address the problem of mental health at local jails.

They voted to approve a program with CHI Memorial and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

Each will kick in $25,000 to help reduce the jail populations of inmates with mental issues.

The County will enter an agreement with the Corporation for Supportive Housing to make it happen.

Commissioners also increased the Sheriff’s budget to deal with the problem.

They also approved grants to expand mental health & substance abuse services at the Homeless health Center.
