Community Members Invited to Participate in National Museum Selfie Day

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Get your phones ready because today we’re talking about an event that’s as picture-perfect as it gets. It’s National Selfie in a Museum Day, and the Scenic City is celebrating in style.

Started in 2014 by the late Mar Dixon, Museum Selfie Day is continuing globally in her honor.

Stated in Mar Dixon’s obituary, “Her biggest and most long-standing success is #MuseumSelfie Day, which first ran in January 2014, one of the many times a themed day carried over into national and international news. It has now become an internationally known day, repeating annually without coordination.”

“She relished in the fact that #MuseumSelfie day was a little subversive, making a museum visit a fun celebration to be recorded as a selfie at a time when not all museums welcomed this kind of photography – or indeed fun – in galleries.”

Today, museum-goers across Chattanooga and around the world were invited to snap, share, and celebrate history, culture, and art in the most modern way: selfies!

But it’s not just about selfies. Museum leaders hope the day will spark deeper connections to culture and history. The initiative aims to make museums more accessible and engaging, especially for younger audiences.

Grab your phone and head out to your favorite Chattanooga Museum before the day ends and snap a picture.
