Community Members Speak Out on U.S. Action in Iran

Chattanooga,TN (WDEF)- Dozens of people gathered at Miller Park this weekend to voice their concerns over the recent U.S. strikes on Iran and the possibility of escalating conflict overseas.

Many demonstrators held signs while engaging in conversations about the growing tensions. Organizers said the goal of the event was to peacefully express concern and encourage public dialogue about the country’s involvement abroad.

Demonstrators said they are worried about the direction of U.S. foreign policy and the potential for further military action.

“That or demanding the U.S. return to diplomacy — that they end the hostility against Iran, that they end the sanctions against Iran,” said Quinn Kaitel with the Chattanooga Democratic Socialists of America.

Kaitel said organizers hope to build solidarity both locally and internationally.

“I think the important thing for us is we want to build solidarity with other regular working people of the world — whether that’s in Iran or whether that’s our neighbor here in Chattanooga. These things are connected. These are our tax dollars. This is our elected government, whether we voted for them or not — they’re representing us right now. We do not feel like we’re being represented by the actions taken,” Kaitel said. “When we’re united, we can speak up and take the power back.”

Others at the rally echoed similar concerns, saying they believe community organizing is key.

“It’s not a very good look. We just gotta find ways to put a stop to it, and I think this is the beginning — to organize it — because we cannot count on politicians to do that for us,” said Ceson with United Against the Elites.

Those in attendance say they want their voices heard as debate continues over U.S. action in Iran, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and peaceful protest.
