CPD says lawyer’s arguments not consistent with police reports

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The lawyer of the man who fought with a Chattanooga police officer Saturday says there are more details than what people have been seeing in the viral video on social media.

McCracken Poston is representing 21-year-old William Alexander Floyd, the man seen in the viral video fist fighting with a police officer.

The incident happened on Station Street in Chattanooga Saturday night, and Poston is asking for all those with videos to come forward, so they can piece everything together that led up to the fight that night.

“There’s a lot more to the story,” Poston said.

The story as it sits now shows a uniformed Chattanooga Police officer in a fight stance facing William Alexander Floyd. The police officer throws a punch, hitting Floyd, before bystanders are able to break up the fight.

“My client was actually thinking he was breaking up a fight. He only saw the officer from behind. Thought it was a man in a black shirt trying to fight somebody he was with. In the middle of trying to break that situation up, he found himself suddenly being challenged to a fight by a Chattanooga police officer,” Poston said.

Poston claims the other uniformed officers nearby were encouraging the fight.

“They were yelling for them to square up, and so that kind of sends a lot of mixed signals,” Poston said.

Another Facebook user commented on the original post with a different video, allegedly showing what transpired before the fight.

Poston also said that the cop in question has been investigated for using excessive force before. In a release, Poston says, “In at least eleven of those [excessive use of force] investigations it was found this officer used excessive force.”

However, Chattanooga Police have looked into the police officer’s history and the number of use of force allegations.

According to Chattanooga Police, the officer does not have eleven sustained use of force allegations.
