DA Reflects on Guilty Resolution

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) – District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett indicated the conclusion of the Craig Liner case brings a difficult but meaningful sense of closure after a guilty plea brought the courtroom proceedings to an abrupt end.

Speaking on Mix 104.1, Hatchett reflected on how the case reached its resolution just as jury selection was about to begin.

He said that timing meant the case ended without a full jury trial, sparing the process of extended courtroom testimony and evidence being presented before a jury.

Hatchett said the defendant was convicted of first-degree murder, felony murder, and aggravated burglary, marking the formal end of a case that he said had a significant impact on the region.

He also noted the case moved from arrest to conviction in 469 days, describing it as a swift timeline given the seriousness of the charges and the weight of the proceedings.

While Hatchett said parole is technically possible, he said the severity of the convictions makes release highly unlikely.

Hatchett said the case closed without the need for a full courtroom process, bringing an end to a case that had been moving toward trial for months.
